California surpassed 1 million electric vehicles (1,054,095 units)—battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, and fuel-cell electric—sold cumulatively through the 4 th quarter of 2021, according to the California Energy Commission (CEC), making it the first US state to achieve this milestone. 379,125 PHEV (36% ). 11,956 FCEV (1.1%).

Plug-in hybrid tech continues to be something that neither automakers nor regulators can completely agree on. Some, like Toyota, Volvo, BMW, and others see them as a smart, effective bridge technology to EVs while others, including GM and Honda see them, at least for now in the U.S., as an unnecessary complication in the shift to EVs.

The Yomiuri Shimbun reports that Honda Motor Co. have entered final negotiations to expand their collaboration beyond the current work on fuel cell vehicles to include plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Honda and GM also plan to form a partnership over the development of technology for automated driving. and General Motors Co.

As East Coast states try to catch California in plug-in car sales, they've lost another arrow in their quiver. Honda switched from offering big incentives on Clarity Plug-In Hybrids in Northeastern States to shipping its entire U.S. allotment to California, according to a Honda spokeswoman.

The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan ( earlier post ) made its North American debut at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show as Honda announced additional details for the vehicle’s entry into the US market. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are a zero emissions technology that Honda believes in, and has worked to advance for more than 20 years.
