Some good news at last for the battered and bruised automotive industry in North America where the new, downsized General Motors Company emerged from bankruptcy yesterday. The new General Motors’ common stock is split as follows: US Department of the Treasury: 60.8%. UAW Retiree Medical Benefits Trust: 17.5%.

General Motors presents viability plan
As it bids to break even at a US total industry sales volume of approximately 10 million vehicles, General Motors has updated its Viability Plan which will deepen the cuts in its operations. General Motors North America structural costs are to decline by 25 per cent from $30.8billion in 2008 to $23.2billion in 2010.

General Motors asset sale receives approval
The sale of substantially all of General Motors Corporation’s assets to NGMCO Inc, an entity funded by the US Department of the Treasury, has been approved by US Bankruptcy Court. Now, NGMCO Inc will change its name to General Motors Company and continue to operate under the company’s historic brands.
