Carbon dioxide capture company AirCapture and carbon dioxide conversion company OCOchem, along with other partners, have won a $2.93-million Nutrien, one of the world’s largest fertilizer manufacturers, has committed to achieve at least a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per ton of Nutrien’s products by 2030.

Scientists at Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology, Korea, have developed a novel heterostructured photocatalyst using titanium and copper, two abundant and relatively inexpensive metals, for the conversion of CO 2 into CH 4. Apart from its CO 2 conversion capabilities, the proposed photocatalyst has other benefits.

To achieve goals for climate and economic growth, “negative emissions technologies” (NETs) that remove and sequester carbon dioxide from the air will need to play a significant role in mitigating climate change, according to a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Among the findings: Less than half of Americans (39%) consider related emissions when they travel. In contrast, worldwide 66% consider those travel-related emissions. In India and China, 89% and 85% of respective respondents reported thinking about emissions when traveling.

A paper by a team from the University of Chicago and MIT suggests that technology-driven cost reductions in fossil fuels will lead to the continued use of fossil fuels—oil, gas, and coal—unless governments pass new taxes on carbon emissions. We need both a policy like a carbon tax and to put more R&D money into renewables.

Wärtsilä Corporation has completed the conversion of the 25,000 dwt product tanker Bit Viking from heavy fuel oil to liquefied natural gas (LNG) operation.
