Study: annual climate impact of wild pigs could be greater than 1.1M cars

Green Car Congress

By uprooting carbon trapped in soil, wild pigs (feral swine), are releasing around 4.9 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide annually across the globe, the equivalent of 1.1 Feral swine are descendants of escaped or released pigs. Their study appears in Global Change Biology. —UQ’s Dr Christopher O’Bryan.

Study finds methane emissions from coal mines ~50% higher than previously thought

Green Car Congress

The results have important implications for Earth’s climate because methane is about 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide when it comes to warming the planet over a long period. The study is the first to attempt to account for methane escaping from abandoned mines. Mines are getting deeper every year. —Nazar Kholod.

Ford launches zero-carbon EV charging from home in California

Teslarati

The program will allow EV owners in California to opt into carbon-neutral vehicle charging that will reduce their carbon footprint from energy used to give power to their electric car. Ford sends evidence of the matching amounts to CARB, ensuring that all home plug-in charging activity is matched with zero-carbon electricity.

Global Carbon Project reports global CO2 emissions suddenly on the rise after 3-year hiatus; need for reducing uncertainties

Green Car Congress

Global emissions of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels have risen again after a three year hiatus, according to new analysis from the Global Carbon Project ( GCP ). The GCP comment is published in the journal Nature Climate Change , as well as in Earth System Science Data Discussions and Environmental Research Letters.

JetBlue to go carbon neutral on all domestic flights by offsetting emissions starting in 2020; flying with SAF from SFO

Green Car Congress

JetBlue will offset carbon dioxide emissions from jet fuel for all domestic JetBlue flights beginning in July 2020, making it the first major US airline to take this measurable step toward reducing its contribution to global warming. Over the lifecycle, it has up to 80% smaller carbon footprint compared to fossil jet fuel.

New study confirms extensive gas leaks in the North Sea; recommends stricter guidelines for handling of abandoned wells

Green Car Congress

Researchers from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel have found that considerable quantities of the greenhouse gas methane escape uncontrolled into the water from abandoned oil and gas wells in the North Sea. On the basis of investigations directly on the seafloor it was possible to determine the amount of escaping gas.

Their findings, published online 29 August in the AGU Journal of Geophysical Research , also suggest that methane trapped under the ocean may already be escaping through vents in the sea floor at a much faster rate than previously believed.
