Ramaco Carbon is partnering with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to develop new, large-scale processes for making graphite from coal. The conversion of coal to higher value materials, such as graphene, graphite or carbon nanotubes, is of high interest, and a number of researchers have proposed processes.

The partners aim to replace coal-fired power plants with hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants in Germany, and to build production of low carbon and renewable hydrogen in Norway that will be exported through pipeline to Germany. Building production facilities in Norway to produce low carbon hydrogen from natural gas with CCS.

By comparison, 69% of steel today is made at approximately 1,600 degrees Celsius (2,912 degrees Fahrenheit) using coal, emitting about two tons of carbon dioxide for every ton of steel produced. Conversion of iron ore into iron accounts for 90% of steelmaking emissions that may be eliminated using Electra’s process.

SGH2’s gasification process uses a plasma-enhanced thermal catalytic conversion process optimized with oxygen-enriched gas. California’s largest owners and operators of hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) are in negotiation to purchase the plant’s output to supply current and future HRS to be built in the state over the next ten years.

A Technical Feasibility Study (TFS) for a coal-to-methanol (CTM) plant based on the Arckaringa coal resources in Australia has concluded that CTM could be a viable project capable of augmenting the Bankable Feasibility Study (BFS) for Altona Energy’s Arckaringa Clean Energy CTL (coal-to-liquids) and Power Project in South Australia.

While cleaner energy sources are on the rise, overall energy demand is expected to grow 37% by 2040.
