Although both diesel and gasoline are made from oil, the trends in their prices do not always go in parallel. While personal driving (which uses primarily gasoline) is down greatly because of various stay-at-home mandates, commercial truck transport (which uses primarily diesel) has been substantially less affected.

Diesel is the predominant technology in commercial trucking, school, and transit bus sectors, according to the Diesel Technology Forum’s analysis of data sourced from S&P Global Mobility TIPNet data of vehicles in operation for Class 3-8 as of December 2021. Of the largest trucks (Class 8) in operation, 97% are diesels.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a rule that establishes the required renewable volumes under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program for 2020, and the biomass-based diesel volume for 2021. The EPA is committed to ensuring a net of 15 billion gallons of conventional biofuel is blended in 2020.

In 2020, total consumption of fossil fuels in the United States, including petroleum, natural gas, and coal, fell to 72.9 2020 marked the largest annual decrease in US fossil fuel consumption in both absolute and percentage terms since at least 1949, the earliest year in the EIA annual data series.
