The all-new 2021 Cadillac Escalade Duramax is big and famous for being the ride of celebrities. It was my first experience driving an Escalade (I have been chauffeured in them). I have driven several Chevrolet and GMC vehicles with the wonderful Duramax turbodiesel engine, so expectations were high for a luxury week behind the wheel.

It was easy to make fun of Dodge and the “fake” exhaust it chose to employ on the new Charger EV, but it’s no longer the only one trying to capture the thrill of a performance gas engine with a silent electric powertrain underneath. Cadillac currently sells two EVs, the Lyriq SUV and the Celestiq sedan.

It is the third best-selling SUV for Cadillac, coming in behind the larger Escalade and XT5, but ahead of the XT6 and Lyriq EV. liter 4-cylinder engine that puts out 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque (on premium gasoline), driving either the front or all-four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
