Other than sports car wanna-bes, modern cars are so quiet that you hear tire/wind noise much more than engines. Nonetheless, I do agree that it wastes of energy, reduces range and should NOT be mandatory. Motor Trend Magazine has extensive coverage of all cars online including road tests, free videos, buying guides, etc.
