The South Korean government had established the institute in 1971 with financing from the United States Agency for International Development and had invited. Kyung Chong-Min, Kim’s first doctoral candidate, joined KAIST’s faculty in 1983; by the time he retired in 2018, Kyung had trained more semiconductor specialists than Kim himself.
