Today cars account for 13% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU and vans 2%. This is especially important now that the prices of diesel and petrol continue to rise. Van-makers would be required to reduce the average emissions of new vehicles by 15% in 2025 and 50% in 2030. All new vans in 2035 would need to be zero-emissions.

A ban on all petrol and diesel-powered vehicles made its way through the European Parliament on Tuesday, February 1. The push to transition consumers toward all-electric powertrains is an effort to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions and reach lofty climate goals. VW is planning to phase out ICE cars in Europe by 2033.

The EU law will require automakers to cut CO2 emissions of new cars sold by 100% by 2035. It would eliminate any possibility of gas or petrol-fueled cars being sold in at least 27 EU countries. The European Parliament has already approved a law banning the sale of combustion engine vehicles by 2035.

The German government is co-funding the three-year project that will test the first cars to run on dimethyl ether (DME) ( earlier post ), commonly used as a non-toxic propellant in aerosol spray gas, and monooxymethylene ether (OME1). Like liquefied petroleum gas, DME must be stored in a slightly pressurized tank.

Jacoby also raised concerns about the viability of the European Commission’s White Paper on Transport, which states that greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector will have to be cut by at least 60% by 2050 to achieve the EU’s climate change goals. It is far too early to dismiss the conventional diesel and petrol power trains.
