Canadian Pacific plans to develop North America’s first hydrogen-powered line-haul locomotive. CP’s Hydrogen Locomotive Program will retrofit a line-haul locomotive with hydrogen fuel cells and battery technology to drive the locomotive’s electric traction motors.

The Norwegian shipping industry is teaming up to develop battery-powered ships. In 2015, these will be followed by the world’s largest electric ferry, which will regularly cross Norway’s largest fjord. 15 years ago, the Norwegian cluster was looking into opportunities for gas-fueled ships.

According to a new study published by the ifo Institue Center for Economic Studies (CESifo) in Germany, EVs will barely help cut CO 2 emissions in the country over the coming years, as the introduction of electric vehicles does not necessarily lead to a reduction in CO 2 emissions from road traffic given the current power generation mix.

ABB has secured a contract with Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Gondán to supply the all-electric power solution for fast 40-meter urban passenger ferries transporting up to 540 passengers each across Lisbon’s Tagus river. This is equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide emissions generated by around 1,400 passenger cars annually.
