I write a column for the Electric Auto Association newsletter, Current EVents. Plug-in cars are inevitable. The other carmakers domestic and foreign have less firm but well press-released plans for plug-ins. GM waxed hot and cold on the EV1. President Obama has stated a commitment to 1 million plug-in cars by 2015.

1 auto maker is accelerating its efforts to meet the challenge by being the first to offer a plug-in hybrid and by expanding its production of biofuel vehicles. But there it is in a Detroit News Autos Insider piece today. The Volt grabbed headlines, lit up online chat boards and dominated the buzz at the auto show in Detroit. Interest in plug-in cars of all sorts is real and growing. The auto industry has disappointed before when it comes to green technology.

The Volt remains a dream, and a new generation Prius (read plug-in) just have to wait for the perfect Lithium battery.

Reminiscent of GM referring to EV1 drivers as "owners," despite their unwillingness to actually sell the car. Three years ago, the magazine Popular Mechanics even wrote an article prodding the auto industry for not building the 100 m.p.g.
