Harvard team demonstrates new metal-free organic–inorganic aqueous flow battery; potential breakthrough for low-cost grid-scale storage

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Harvard have demonstrated a metal-free organic–inorganic aqueous flow battery—a quinone–bromide flow battery (QBFB)—as an example of a class of energy storage materials that exploits the favorable chemical and electrochemical properties of a family of molecules known as quinones.

False Starts: The Story of Vehicle-to-Grid Power

Cars That Think

They wanted to see whether an electric vehicle could feed electricity back to the grid. The company’s president, Tom Gage , dubbed the system “vehicle to grid” or V2G. For the utilities, it promised an economical way of meeting rising demand for electricity. AC Propulsion’s experiment was timely.

USC team develops novel organic redox flow battery for large-scale energy storage

Green Car Congress

Scientists at USC have developed a novel water-based Organic Redox Flow Battery (ORBAT) for lower cost, long lasting large-scale energy storage. ORBAT employs two different water-soluble organic redox couples on the positive and negative side of a flow battery. None of today’s mature battery technologies meet all of these requirements.

SwRI develops first ERCOT-qualified vehicle-to-grid aggregation system

Green Car Congress

SwRI’s V2G aggregation system allows electric delivery truck fleet owners to make money by using normal vehicle charge times to assist in managing grid frequency. The SwRI system suspends vehicle charging when the electric grid frequency drops too far below 60 Hertz, the normal operating frequency. Click to enlarge.
