The average retail cost of regular gasoline in 2018 was $2.719 per gallon. Consequently, the average cost of the available energy from gasoline is $0.226 per 10,000 Btu. per 100 kWh.

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh have found that the air pollution and greenhouse gas costs of shipping crude by rail are nearly twice as large as those for oil pipelines.
