GM Europe staged the world premieres of the Opel Ampera, the European cousin of the Chevrolet Volt, and the Chevrolet Spark mini-car, at the Geneva Motor Show. The Ampera goes on sale in Europe in 2011, the Spark in early 2010. The Ampera is an extended range electric vehicle based on the Voltec technology used in the Chevrolet Volt.

If all goes as planned, VW is hoping to introduce the technology on vehicles by 2010, that magical year when plug-in electric vehicles being promised by multiple automakers are supposed to hit the world's roads. No word yet on how many of these four cars will actually hit the market in 2010.

The Chevy Volt , a plug-in electric car, will have the battery power to take most American drivers to and from work every day without using any gasoline at all. The vehicle will be recharged at night, plugged into a standard home outlet. Toyota also is developing a plug-in hybrid, expected on the road by 2010.

The Hybrid Synergy Drive system in the Prius v uses two high-output motors, one 60 kW (80 hp) unit that mainly works to power the compact, lightweight transaxle and another smaller motor that mainly works as the electric power source. Maximum motor drive voltage is 650 volts DC.
