After spending the past year and a half converting a Porsche 914 to an electric vehicle, I decided to expand my horizons by designing an open-source electric vehicle (EV) conversion kit for a commonly used car. I wanted a project that the group could share their collective brain power and rally around.

Here's the Iota DLS-45 12V power supply. EVParts.com sells it as a DC-DC converter for many of their electric vehicle conversion kits. It's a bit larger than the CCPower C400 DC-DC converter supplied with the kit, but it still fits in the same space and can be plugged into a 115V AC outlet for charging the accessory battery offline.

It turns out that if the voltage coming from my batteries fell into the 136 to 149 volt range (EE2NoAccelBat + EE2AccelRamp = 149), then the controller would linearly limit the power going into the motor down to zero when the voltage reached 136. With a 144V nominal pack, at moderate current draws, I was getting major power loss.

There's very little power from the system, I can't go much above 30mph After sending error logs to Azure Dynamics, they came back with the following: " Vehicles with improper or substandard grounding and shielding sometimes exhibit nuisance errors flagged as EE3LastError = 16. One of the other 914 kit converters questioned why the accessory battery couldn't stay in the original tray, but I decided to remove it anyway and have the accessory battery up in the front trunk near the DC/DC converter. to power the washer solution sprayer. I recently sent off an e-mail to Azure Dynamics, the maker of the DMOC445 AC motor controller in the 914 kit. I asked how I could tap into the motor encoder signals to create an RPM signal for the tachometer on the dashboard. It turns out that the DMOC controller already has a PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) output that can be used for this.
