U of Illinois team models capabilities of hybrid-electric propulsion systems for general aviation aircraft

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have utilized a series of simulations to model the performance of twin-engine hybrid-electric general-aviation propulsion systems. Since the parallel architecture mechanically couples the shaft power of the engine and motor together, only one electrical machine is needed.

Champaign-Urbana orders two New Flyer 60' hydrogen fuel-cell buses

The bus has a Siemens 160 kW, 2,400 N·m rear axle drive motor and a ZF electric portal middle axle (ZF/AVE130) with two 125 kW, 11,000 N·m motors. MTD is the public transportation provider in the Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy regions of Illinois, also serving the University of Illinois.

DOE awards Magna a grant to develop and ‘auto qualify’ advanced motor; 1/2 the cost, 8x power density

Magna has been awarded a grant by the US Department of Energy to develop and ‘auto-qualify’ advanced electric motor technologies for next-generation vehicle propulsion systems. The project objective is to develop an electric motor that is half the cost and eight times the power density, while delivering 125 kW of peak power.

NASA awarding $6 million to 3-year ULI project to develop approach to electric aircraft fueled by liquid hydrogen
