CSIRO engineers modified Toyota Prius hybrids by removing the OEM battery pack and installing a larger 6 kWh, 30 Ah NiMH battery pack (five times the capacity of the original 1.2 Ah pack) and a battery charger to allow the cars to plug into and charge with electricity from the grid or from on-site renewable energy sources.

Next-generation lithium-ion battery power could allow for powering cars with clean energy from solar cells and from wind turbines. We have chosen to work with BMW in this area first.

We chose the solar-powered Park n Ride just off 80. In a Prius or Civic Hybrid at 50mpg, the trip would have cost about $30 in gas, tolls and parking in Sacto. The Good About half our electricity comes from coal, and that will change, at best, slowly as we move to renewables. Of course as our efforts to green the grid take effect, and that's happening already, plug-in cars yield even greater reductions in GHGs.
