Wind-to-Hydrogen Tech Goes to Sea

Cars That Think

Wind and solar parks produce a large portion of their energy. Then, as now, wind farms are operating off the world’s coasts—but not all of these offshore sites are connected to the mainland via underwater power cables. Some of the wind farms instead sit in clusters more than 100 kilometers out at sea.

Highview Power and Encore Renewable Energy to co-develop the first long-duration, liquid-air energy storage system in US

Green Car Congress

With Highview Power’s liquid air energy storage solution, excess or off-peak electricity is used to clean and compress air which is then stored in liquid form in insulated tanks at temperatures approaching -320 ?F

CESifo: EVs not the best option for reduction in on-road CO2 in Germany given power mix

Green Car Congress

They report that even with today’s technology, total emissions from a combustion engine powered by natural gas are already almost one-third lower than those of a diesel engine. —Professor Buchal.

Stanford study quantifies energetic costs of grid-scale energy storage over time; current batteries the worst performers; the need to improve cycle life by 3-10x

Green Car Congress

Using a new metric—“Energy Stored on Invested, ESOI”—they concluded that batteries were the worst performers, while compressed air energy storage (CAES) performed the best, followed by pumped hydro storage (PHS). Their results are published in the RSC journal Energy & Environmental Science. —Charles Barnhart.

Naval Research Lab uses liquid hydrogen to almost double endurance record for small electric UAV

Green Car Congress

This flight shatters their previous record of 26 hours and 2 minutes set in 2009 using the same vehicle, but with gaseous hydrogen stored at 5,000 pounds per square inch (psi). The cryogenic liquid is stored in a lightweight tank, allowing more hydrogen to be carried onboard to increase flight endurance.

New lithium polysulfide flow battery for large-scale energy storage

Green Car Congress

The work is some of the earliest supported by the DOE’s new Joint Center for Energy Storage Research battery hub (JCESR). For solar and wind power to be used in a significant way, we need a battery made of economical materials that are easy to scale and still efficient. Batteries Power Generation Smart Grid'
