POSCO to set up two JVs with Huayou Cobalt for Li-ion battery precursors and cathodes

South Korea-based steelmaker POSCO will establish two Li-ion battery material joint ventures in China with leading cobalt supplier Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt. China’s Huayou Cobalt is the largest cobalt producer in China and is capable of supplying 50% of demand from lithium-ion battery producers. The company also owns a nickel mine.

ABB wins $20M order from HESS for e-bus flash-charging technology

Batteries mounted on the roofs of the Nantes buses will be charged in 20 seconds with a 600-kilowatt boost of power at selected stops while passengers are embarking and disembarking. A further 1 to 5 minutes of charging at the terminus at the end of the line—at 400 kW—enables a full recharge of the batteries.

is developing a phosphorous sulfide solid electrolyte (Li 2 S-P 2 S 5 ) for solid-state lithium-ion batteries. A battery using the solid electrolyte under development by Idemitsu also operated at low temperatures of less than 0 °C. The company expects to commercialize solid-state lithium-ion cells using the new electrolyte around 2012.
