A study by a team of researchers from Germany and South Africa forsees the gradual replacement of lead-acid SLI (starter, lighting and ignition) batteries with Li-ion batteries over the next couple of years. That will see an uptake of more hybrid-, plug-in hybrids and BEVs in the EU.

Mercedes-Benz selects Plug Power fuel cell technology for lift truck fleet

Nissan using second-life LEAF batteries in factory AGVs

Plus, workers no longer need to take out the batteries to plug them in. The repurposed LEAF batteries also last longer than lead-acid batteries, which were typically replaced every year or two. At Nissan’s Oppama plant, south of Tokyo, there are more than 700 AGVs. Globally, Nissan has more than 4,000 AGVs at work.
