GM today announced two contracts to "design and test lithium-ion batteries" for use in the Saturn Vue Plug-in Hybrid announced last month at the LA Auto Show. While the future may belong to Lithium, a case can easily be made for the early roll-0ut of NiMH plug-ins. A partnership of Cobasys (Chevron/ECD) and A123 got the second.

The Honda EV+ used the same Panasonic EV-95 NiMH battery modules with an active system, and those packs didn't last as long. Of course, Toyota could do it today with larger NiMH battery packs. Both GM and Toyota are disingenuously pushing the nonsensical notion that plug-ins need to wait for Lithium batteries to prove themselves. Toyota's recent announcement postponing the switch from NiMH to Lithium batteries is meant to convince us we'll just have to wait.

The first cars will utilize NiMH batteries, as do the Toyota test platform Plug-in Priuses at the University of California. From where I sit (in the driver's seat of a NiMH powered Toyota RAV4 EV) this seems eminently practical. NiMH is the risk-free pathway.

Toyota is using a NiMH battery in the Mirai. I am just starting my new job as the GM in the Los Angeles region, our largest company owned distributor covering Southern California. Current-generation hybrid components were used extensively in the fuel cell powertrain, including the electric motor, power control and main battery.
