Mitsubishi could be the first with cars for sale if the UK distributor has its way. The first cars will utilize NiMH batteries, as do the Toyota test platform Plug-in Priuses at the University of California. From where I sit (in the driver's seat of a NiMH powered Toyota RAV4 EV) this seems eminently practical.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. Expected deposits in 2009 and first sales in CA in 2010. 2010 Prius designed to be manufactured with NiMH or Lithium batteries.
