The Government of Canada is moving forward with provincial and territorial partners, industry and stakeholders, to develop a national strategy to increase the number of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVS)—battery electric, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles—on Canadian roads by 2018. Transportation accounts for about 24% of Canada’s emissions, mostly from cars and trucks.

Based on a three-year study of toxic and environmentally relevant pollutants from gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines, Swiss researchers have concluded that some GDI engines emit just as many soot particles as unfiltered diesel cars did in the past. Further, the GDI particles carry numerous carcinogenic substances. Based on this current data, they recommend that particulate filters be mandatory for GDI engines.

Researchers at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB), with colleagues from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and University of Potsdam, have fabricated a nanomaterial made from nanoparticles of a titanium oxide compound (Ti 4 O 7 ) for use as a cathode material in lithium-sulfur batteries. The highly porous nanomaterial features high storage capacity that remains nearly constant over many charging cycles.

Volkswagen has selected the first six teams for the new start-up incubator at Volkswagen’s Gläserne Manufaktur (Transparent Factory, earlier post ) in Dresden: the start-ups Smart City System from Nuremberg; LoyalGo from Dortmund; Tretbox from Berlin; and Ekoio from Leipzig were declared winners on Thursday evening following a pitch competition at the factory.

According to Growth Energy’s ongoing analysis of fuel sales and consumption data reported by major gasoline retailers, drivers across the United States have logged more than 1 billion miles on E15. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) delivered 635 Outlander PHEV vehicles to the National Police of Ukraine on 25 May through its local importer and distributor MMC Ukraine. The vehicle order stems from an emissions trading agreement signed by a number of Japanese companies with the Government of Ukraine. As part of its policy to reduce CO 2 and greenhouse warming gases using the Kyoto Protocol Green Investment Scheme, the Ukrainian government will use the Outlander PHEVs as police vehicles.

Ricardo demonstrated its new real-world driving emissions measurement service ( earlier post ), and discussed the first results from its road side vehicle monitoring research, at the Air Quality & Emissions Show (AQE) in the UK earlier this week. Ricardo launched its vehicle emission measurement service in April 2017. The system uses absorption spectroscopy to monitor and record emissions from a vehicle’s exhaust as it passes by a road-side sensor.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey recently signed bill HB2368 , enabling the retail sale of isobutanol-blended gasoline for on-road vehicles. The bill permits isobutanol to be used as an oxygenate in gasoline for on-road vehicles in Arizona. (More precisely, it removes isobutanol from the list of proscribed oxygenates.). The new law takes effect in August 2017.

Daimler has laid the foundation for its second battery factory. At its wholly-owned subsidiary ACCUMOTIVE in Kamenz, the second factory for lithium-ion batteries is being built with an investment of around €500 million (US$562 million). The technology group Wärtsilä has signed an agreement with Eidesvik Offshore to install a hybrid system with batteries on board of its vessel Viking Princess. The ship will become the first offshore supply vessel in which batteries reduce the number of generators on board. European car registrations totalled 1.22 million units in April 2017, a drop of 7.1% when compared to April 2016 and the largest monthly decline seen since March 2013, according to JATO Dynamics.
