After seeing the movie Who Killed The Electric Car , I got the nutty idea earlier this year to purchase an all-electric vehicle to commute to work. After doing some research, I found Electro Automotive out of Felton, CA and put down the $13,000 for one of their latest AC motor conversion kits for the Porsche 914.

Over the past few weeks I've been trying to contact the folks at Electro Automotive to get the status of the EV 914 kit. They finally responded last night and apparently they're completely buried under the demand for EV conversion kits. He got one of the earlier DC motor kits for the 914 from Electro Automotive.

The panels generate DC current that varies with the solar power. The inverter converts the DC solar into AC power that can power the house or be directed back into the Grid as well as connecting up the Battery packs that uses 48 Volt DC. . Inverter: This is the most important bit of kit. They seem a fine unit.

I lost much sleep last night obsessing about how I could fix the DC-DC converter and, as a result, I was very tired and had an irritable day. I find out this morning from Ross Cunniff (who also recently completed the 914 AC kit), that he has had ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS with his CCPower DC-DC converter.

Today, I installed the last kit piece that I have from Electro Automotive: the motor controller wiring harness. Just for grins, I plugged in the motor position indicator connector and inserted the main motor drive cable into the controller to get an idea what this thing might look like completed. This made the installation much easier.

If you want to keep the tyre mobility kit and power cable bags in the boot, this also eats into space. I figure leaving it there to cook in the sun would be a Very Bad Idea, but I’m pleased to discover the paint surface seems to repel it easily, and it wipes away quickly. No frunk on offer, either.

It would be a good idea to retrofit this in existing Nexon's. One idea would be to cater to the commercial segment. Another idea that we discussed was using this for charging swappable batteries. Jay’s first EV was the DC motor Reva, which he bought way back in the early 2000s. So was his wife. Alas, no show!

Standard kit is generous. For the same money the wagon with Launch Edition kit looks the pick. I’ve no idea why, as 22s are only optional fit – as standard the Q8 SUV rides on 20s, and Sportback and Launch Editions on 21s. Over the outgoing e-tron, the Q8 e-tron’s maximum DC charging performance is up by 20kW to 170kW.
