Can anyone explain to me in simple terms why most conversions keep the gearbox and use an adapter plate to bolt on the electric motor ? I get that it's probably simpler for alignment etc.,

9/19/2011: Bought 1993 Plymouth Laser for $300. Then towed the vehicle back to our hometown at the cost of $200 in rental and gasoline. 10 hours of work, $500 spent, starting weight of vehicle: 2531 pounds. 9/20/2011: Cleaned car. Removed: radiators, exhaust manifold, upper cylinder head, alternator, camshaft, and assorted support bars.

I am interested in using a forklift motor to convert to an EV. An owner of a forklift wreckers told me that a 24V electric palletjack motor would be good for a small car. He said that he would sell me a motor that can lift about 3.5 tonne, and a variable SCR, gearbox and accelerator, all from a pallet jack for $600-$1000 (AUS$).

EV Grinning, we have just completed our conversion from gas to electric, two weeks ago the Fiero passed it's safety test with no problems. Even though the range is less than I expected, I am really enjoying showing the conversion to people and their shock when I open the rear deck to expose the engine conpartment.

The conversion instructions I'm following are not great and the folks I got the kit from are not returning calls. Almost completed cutting the hole in the trunk for the rear battery box. There's something satisfying about watching the sparks fly when you cut metal. Still I think it's ok.

I have also bought on Ebay a used Advanced FB1-4001A DC motor which was removed from a EV ranger for $511, the seller also had the controller, a CURTIS PMC model 1231C-8601, voltage 96-144, current 500 A, so I am getting both for $1050. I am presently stuck on batteries?

This EV conversion is going to be used in a 1987 GM Panel truck with an estimated weight of 10,000lbs. (See photos attached to the opening post). This is because the larger motor uses a face plate which is very similar in design and the output shaft has the same diameter. For that reason we used the Low gear Planetary Set with a 2.84

Bought most of the bits for the conversion in December 2010. They shipped in and I took delivery in May 2011. July 2012: Embarrassing mess. Should I look for a straight axle with chain conversion? All the Golf cart motors I have been finding on the net are either 10 or 19 spline. My first question is. Should I abandon the drive shaft setup right out of the gate? I have the resources to create an adapter to convert the 13 spine either up or down to match a golf cart motor.

I'm trying to decide if I was to go with another gas engine or turn it into a electric car. If I go gas it will probably cost me $2000 or so.
