The Paris Agreement reflected an unprecedented international determination to act on climate. The focus must be on the decarbonization of the global energy system as it accounts for almost two-thirds of greenhouse gas emissions. Renewable energy now accounts for 24% of global power generation and 16% of primary energy supply.

Renewable energy technologies could generate 40% of the world’s electricity by 2050, according to research presented at the International Scientific Congress “Climate Change: Global Risks, Challenges & Decisions”. More specifically, Germany has more than doubled its share of renewable energy since 2000.

Fifty years later, the USA is faced with a similar challenge, energy independency and climatic change. In Germany, renewable electricity generation will be 35 percent by 2020, and 50 percent by 2050. As our planet’s atmosphere overheats because the greenhouse gas firewall we’ve built by burning fossil fuels works so damn well, there is one secret weapon we can all still whip out if we want to fight back and try to save ourselves from frying.
