Study: annual climate impact of wild pigs could be greater than 1.1M cars

Green Car Congress

Their study appears in Global Change Biology. Feral swine are descendants of escaped or released pigs. The researchers used predictive population models coupled with advanced mapping techniques to estimate the climate damage wild pigs are causing across five continents. Feral swine have been reported in at least 35 states.

Study finds methane emissions from coal mines ~50% higher than previously thought

Green Car Congress

The study is the first to attempt to account for methane escaping from abandoned mines. The team cites deeper mines, more abandoned mines, and a greater percentage of surface mines from which methane escapes more freely as reasons why. Under the same conditions, the amount of methane escaping from working mines would be cut in half.

Study finds GHG methane offsets its warming ~30% and precipitation increase ~60% by short-wave absorption

Green Car Congress

Robert Allen/UCR) Both types of energy—longwave (from Earth) and shortwave (from sun)—escape from the atmosphere more than they are absorbed into it. The atmosphere needs compensation for the escaped energy, which it gets from heat created as water vapor condenses into rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Resources Allen, R.J.,

MIT Researchers Elucidate Model for Escape of Underground Methane in Frozen Regions; Current Rate of Escape May be Much Faster Than Earlier Believed

gas hydrate accumulations in ocean sediments and permafrost—escapes. Their findings, published online 29 August in the AGU Journal of Geophysical Research , also suggest that methane trapped under the ocean may already be escaping through vents in the sea floor at a much faster rate than previously believed. New study confirms extensive gas leaks in the North Sea; recommends stricter guidelines for handling of abandoned wells

Green Car Congress

Researchers from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel have found that considerable quantities of the greenhouse gas methane escape uncontrolled into the water from abandoned oil and gas wells in the North Sea. On the basis of investigations directly on the seafloor it was possible to determine the amount of escaping gas.

Global Carbon Project reports global CO2 emissions suddenly on the rise after 3-year hiatus; need for reducing uncertainties

Green Car Congress

High-accuracy calibrated atmospheric measurements, diverse satellite data, and integrative modelling approaches could, and ultimately must, provide independent evidence of the effectiveness of collective action to address climate change. Some had previously hoped that emissions might soon reach their peak after three stable years.

Ford launches zero-carbon EV charging from home in California

Teslarati

Ford is participating in the program with the California Air Resource Board (CARB) Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) to give EV owners new ways to reduce greenhouse gases while charging their cars. The only requirements to be eligible for the program are to live in California and own any of Ford’s all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
