Umicore last week inaugurated its carbon-neutral production facility for cathode active materials (CAM) for electric vehicles in Nysa, Poland. Construction of the plant began in 2019 and production started in July this year. —Mathias Miedreich, CEO of Umicore. Currently, Umicore in Nysa employs about 240 people.

The factory is expected to start the first part of its operations in late 2024 and will employ up to 1,000 people, utilizing 100% clean energy from the region. Fully built out, the site will have a potential annual production capacity of more than 100 GWh of cathode material, which will enable cell assembly at multiple Northvolt facilities.

In 2021, a large share of Europe’s supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) originated in the United States, Qatar, and Russia. In January 2022, the United States supplied more than half of all LNG imports into Europe for the month. Supply challenges in the European market have led to rising regional prices for natural gas.
