Stanford team develops sodium-ion battery with performance equivalent to Li-ion, but at much lower cost

Green Car Congress

Stanford researchers have developed a sodium-ion battery (SIB) that can store the same amount of energy as a state-of-the-art lithium ion, at substantially lower cost. Thus, further research is required to find better sodium host materials. The sodium salt makes up the cathode; the anode is made up of phosphorous.

GE to expand sodium-halide battery plant with $70M investment

Green Car Congress

GE will invest an additional $70 million to expand its sodium-halide battery manufacturing plant in New York, which is part of the company’s new Energy Storage business. GE is also looking at using the batteries in heavy-duty hybrid applications such as in buses, locomotives and mining vehicles.

Researchers devise electrode architectures to prevent dendrite formation in solid-state batteries

Green Car Congress

The idea was inspired by experimental high-temperature batteries, in which one or both electrodes consist of molten metal. At the ordinary temperatures that the battery operates in, “it stays in a regime where you have both a solid phase and a liquid phase,” in this case made of a mixture of sodium and potassium.

Carbon-Neutral Gasoline Out Of Air? Yes, There's A Caveat

Green Car Reports

Call it last week's most unexpected headline: the idea that a group of engineers in Britain had managed to create gasoline ("petrol") out of. Indeed, it appears to be so--if you add energy (and sodium hydroxide). Here's how it works: The process starts by blowing atmospheric air into a tower containing the sodium hydroxide, which.

BASF announces winners of the open innovation contest on energy storage

Green Car Congress

The research group of Professor Xiangwu Zhang from North Carolina State University presents the concept of high-performance sodium-ion batteries that applies special electrode preparation methods. Sustainable technologies should make it possible to store power from the grid and feed power back into it.
