T&E study finds EU has replaced Russian oil barrel-for-barrel as continent fails to cut demand

Green Car Congress

Since the EU imposed sanctions on Russia in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine, there has been a redrawing of the global oil map, a new study by Transport & Environment (T&E) shows. Instead of cutting demand, Europe has simply replaced imports from Russia with oil from other producing countries. C carbon budget.

UH researchers developing autonomous robot for subsea oil and gas pipeline inspection

Green Car Congress

To reduce the number of accidents in the global oil and gas industry caused by damaged pipelines, University of Houston researchers are developing an autonomous robot to identify potential pipeline leaks and structural failures during subsea inspections. Preliminary studies were funded by UH’s Subsea Systems Institute.

Study finds total greenhouse gas footprint of blue hydrogen “quite high” due to fugitive methane

Green Car Congress

“Blue” hydrogen—produced through steam methane reforming (SMR) of natural gas or coal gasification, but with CO 2 capture and storage—is being described as having low or zero carbon emissions. For our default assumptions (3.5% Even if true though, the use of blue hydrogen appears difficult to justify on climate grounds.

Researchers find carbon-nanotube-based fluids improve enhanced oil recovery methods

Green Car Congress

Researchers in India are using multi-wall carbon nanotube-optimized surfactant-polymer flooding for enhanced oil recovery. In an open-access paper in the journal Fuel , they report that their experimental application of carbon nanotube-based fluids yielded an oil recovery factor of approximately 70% of the original oil in place.

New study confirms extensive gas leaks in the North Sea; recommends stricter guidelines for handling of abandoned wells

Green Car Congress

Researchers from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel have found that considerable quantities of the greenhouse gas methane escape uncontrolled into the water from abandoned oil and gas wells in the North Sea. The new study by GEOMAR scientists confirms this initial estimate on a larger data basis.

Study suggests microbe produces methane from crude oil all by itself

Green Car Congress

Crude oil and gas naturally escape from the seabed in many places known as seeps. This microbe, an archaeon named Methanoliparia , transforms the hydrocarbons by a process called alkane disproportionation: it splits the oil into methane (CH 4) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). © Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology).
