SUV registrations totalled 556,400 units during the month, up by only 0.7% But the most worrying result from June was not the continuous diesel decline, but the slowdown in demand for SUVs. The first is that the poor conditions of the wider market are finally impacting SUVs, which are usually more expensive than regular car types.

Ford has cracked the door wide open for the new Explorer EV to come to Australia following the decision to axe the Escape SUV locally. This is exactly what happened when we got our Toyota RAV EV six years ago. The difference with how Nissan is approaching the EV is interesting. I heard today that they expect to have 5,000 Nissan EVs for sale by the end of 2010. No charger, no car. So, it appears most, if not all of the cars will be delivered in June.

A: For the last five years, after they took the GM EV1 away, I’ve been driving a Toyota RAV4 EV. Until Toyota gives consumers a plug-in option, I consider myself officially at odds with that company — although I have to appreciate that the Prius is a pretty amazing car. Certainly, we’re there with SUVs being on the sidelines.
