The US Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a notice of proposed rulemaking ( NPRM ) to update electrical safety requirements for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and mild hybrid vehicles. The proposed updates to FMVSS No. 305 currently only has post-crash electrical safety requirements.

The 2011 Toyota Prius hybrid gets the best gas mileage rating of any car for sale in the U.S. At least, no other car that doesn't plug into the wall for some (2011 Chevy Volt) or all (2011 Nissan Leaf) of the energy. market today.

Tesla helped former shareholder Toyota to bring back the Toyota RAV4 EV , an electric SUV and also aided its other OEM shareholder, Daimler (which also has since divested its Tesla shares), with the Smart ED and B-Class Electric. X marks the spot of Tesla’s expansion. Ford has had little to show in the EV market some some time.

As GM talks up the Volt, it ensures EV1s at museums and universities not be returned to the road as electric cars. As Toyota gets headlines for suggesting it will offer a few fleets a few plug-in hybrids in 3 or 4 years, it does what it can to take the myth-busting RAV4 EV out of private hands. But Toyota refused.
