The BMW Mini E has hit the streets. Barely one year ago, word surfaced that an electric Mini was in the works. In June about 500 cars were placed in consumer and fleet hands in Los Angeles and New York and New Jersey for what BMW calls a " field trial." They produced a small fleet for the Munich Olympics in 1972.

Smart will be launching a test fleet of 250 electric cars in selected areas, including: Portland, San Jose, Indianapolis, Orlando, and the Washington, D.C. BMW partners with Green Mountain Energy Company to offer renewable energy certificates to BMW ActiveE Drivers

ActiveE drivers who power their vehicles with renewable energy for the estimated mileage usage will offset 9,900 lbs (4,490 kg) of CO 2 during the course of their two year lease, the equivalent of not driving 11,000 miles in a conventional gas-powered car. 700 BMW ActiveEs are on the road in the US, mostly in private hands.

When running purely on electrical power, it is possible to travel for up to 75 kilometers (47 miles) at a constant speed of 60 km/h (37 mph). Use of the combustion engine provides a minimum additional range of 400 kilometers (249 miles), which is in line with the driving profile of Chinese customers in the premium segment, BMW says.
