The BMW Mini E has hit the streets. Barely one year ago, word surfaced that an electric Mini was in the works. In June about 500 cars were placed in consumer and fleet hands in Los Angeles and New York and New Jersey for what BMW calls a " field trial." They produced a small fleet for the Munich Olympics in 1972.

Everyone’s all excited that Ford just turned a profit, but they’re doing it with a fleet of uninspired crappy cars that they practically have to give away. When’s your affordable EV that gets 1oo mile range on a quick charge Ford? You might as well call most of the cars they’re selling “future clunkers.&#

Ongoing field tests involving more than 600 MINI E cars, including 450 in the US, have already provided knowledge about the demands on future electrically powered production vehicles. A fleet of more than 1000 BMW ActiveE vehicles will provide further valuable insights into the everyday use of the vehicle.

Teslas mostly, but the first BMW MINI E was also delivered last week, and we’ll have about 500 more of them on the road within the month. All but a thousand or so survived the crusher and have been proving themselves for 6-10 years by driving millions of oil-free, noise-free miles. It’s happening.

The University of California, Davis and the BMW Group released the largest publicly available study of electric-car users yet conducted, including more than 120 families who drove the fully electric MINI E automobile more than 1 million miles in California, New York and New Jersey from June 2009 to June 2010.
