The system enables the vessel to operate on full electric power alone, with no carbon emissions being generated. The company aims to realize 30 zero-emission shipping routes by 2030.

Wärtsilä and partners developing emissions-free barge concept

The technology group Wärtsilä has joined a consortium of key partners to form Zero Emission Services B.V. The concept is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Within the Netherlands transport sector, inland navigation accounts for 5% of carbon dioxide emissions.

Alstom to test its hydrogen fuel cell train in the Netherlands; first pilot project outside Germany

Alstom and the Province of Groningen, local operator Arriva, the Dutch railway infrastructure manager ProRail and the energy company Engie have signed plans for a pilot project to test the Coradia iLint, a passenger train powered by hydrogen fuel cells ( earlier post ), for the first time in the Netherlands.

Toyota and DIFFER partner on direct solar production of hydrogen from humid air, rather than water

The Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research ( DIFFER ) is partnering with Toyota Motor Europe (TME) to develop a device that absorbs water vapor, and splits it into hydrogen and oxygen directly using solar energy. This first prototype achieved 70% of the performance that is obtained when an equivalent device is filled with water.

Cargill partners with Kotug to launch first electric pusher tug and barge

Cargill has partnered with Kotug International to deploy Kotug’s zero emission E-Pusher Type M and E-Barges—the world’s first fully electric pusher boat and barges—to transport cocoa beans from the Port of Amsterdam, the largest cocoa import port in the world, to Cargill’s cocoa factory in Zaandam, the Netherlands.
