With a maximum DC fast-charging rate of 144kW, the MG4 Essence 77 can recharge its battery pack from 10-80 percent in a claimed 38 minutes. It winds back a bit as you go through Normal and Eco drive modes, but it still feels strong and capable. Sadly, there’s no spare tyre under the boot floor, just an inflator kit.

In case of power outage at home, the DC pins in the charger can send juice back into the house, keeping the lights on. And that’s much cheaper than a new $1,300 kit. Just as there is an Apple ecosystem, so with home and EV battery systems you could wind up with a Ford setup, a Tesla setup, or a VW setup. Not so independent.

BYD is also working on a sportier BYD Dolphin Sport with flared wheel arches, stickier tyres and an aggressive body kit. Public DC charging can be done at up to 60kW. That softness in the suspension means the body is more prone to leaning through corners, something more obvious once you wind up the pace.
