SDG&E tested the performance of two 2007-model Prius hybrids and then converted them into plug-in hybrids, using a Hymotion 5 kWh lithium-ion battery conversion kit. The converted plug-in hybrids recharge their batteries through a standard 110-volt household outlet and charge in five to six hours for a 5 kWh lithium-ion battery.

If you hadn't read before, the 18 8-volt golf cart batteries add 800 pounds to the weight of the car, so the suspension needs upgrading. The real gamble is how fast the rest of the kit shows up. Mine was set to 136 volts. It turns out that if the voltage coming from my batteries fell into the 136 to 149 volt range (EE2NoAccelBat + EE2AccelRamp = 149), then the controller would linearly limit the power going into the motor down to zero when the voltage reached 136. I recommend this alteration to anyone using this kit!

These high-capacity 8-volt golf-cart batteries are 70 pounds apiece. A modification of the prior strap is basically what is suggested in the DC kit instructions. Since the positive terminal of the auxiliary battery is tied to the unswitched 12V rail, the negative terminal of the battery is at zero volts. of the DC instructions, it drives the keyswitch relay coil instantaneously with 12 volts, energizing the coil. The 914 AC kit uses 8V golf cart batteries and I'm wondering if different batteries like Hawkers or Optima Yellow-Top batteries would be better. Both US-Battery and Trojan have 8-volt golf-cart batteries. With the AC system, I'll probably be pulling less amps and am looking forward to the extended range.

At that point, we expect the aftermarket companies prices to have come down sufficiently so that their conversions will be attractive to owners of hundreds of thousands of hybrids already on the road. One of the other 914 kit converters questioned why the accessory battery couldn't stay in the original tray, but I decided to remove it anyway and have the accessory battery up in the front trunk near the DC/DC converter. It turns out that the positive wire to the horn is also tied directly to the positive terminal of the 12-volt system.

This version had mounting tabs that fit well with the bolt holes from the original kit. The 12V voltmeter in the center console never dropped below 12 and stayed at 13 volts most of the time, even with the headlights on. The newer version is the M series and is even smaller and has no heatsink fins on the sides.

Jo has done an excellent job of "pimping" the ride, the original kit from Blue Sky Designs in Oregon. He and Charlie put in a FatBoy Harley Davidson rear tire with belt drive to a 72 volt motor. Charlie is small enough to get behind the wheel, yes, wheel on this motorcycle. It also has floor brakes and accelerator.
