In a recent announcement from American electric vehicle maker Tesla, a Model S Plaid with Track Pack was able to set a new lap record for a production EV at the Nurburgring with a time of 7:25.231. It is also over 8 seconds faster than the 7:33.350 record that was set by a Porsche Taycan Turbo S with Performance Kit last August.

After doing some research, I found Electro Automotive out of Felton, CA and put down the $13,000 for one of their latest AC motor conversion kits for the Porsche 914.

EVParts.com sells it as a DC-DC converter for many of their electric vehicle conversion kits. It's a bit larger than the CCPower C400 DC-DC converter supplied with the kit, but it still fits in the same space and can be plugged into a 115V AC outlet for charging the accessory battery offline.

I drove the electric 914 back out to Camp914 where I originally purchased the car and drove it away as a gasoline vehicle. Camp 914 is a fun place with many 914s as well as other Porsches and classic cars. I've mentioned before that I'm working on an open-source EV kit. Yesterday was fun. One of the annoying behaviors of the motor system in my AC 914 kit is that the default DMOC445 parameters causes the acceleration and braking to have oscillations. There were probably twenty electric vehicles at EV awareness day. The electrically augmented bicycle. This was originally just a human powered vehicle made in Belgium, but the owner added an electric motor to power the rear third wheel to get up the hills in Portland (of which there aren't many in Belgium).

I called around to several Porsche repair shops and finally found Dan Hall's Auto Machine. With the motor out, I'm going to look into RPM kits for electric cars that use spinning magnets on the flywheel with a magnetic sensor to generate a signal. I haven't touched my gasoline car in two weeks now. Stay tuned.

I've already added the 3-hole cap-plug provided in the kit. Note the dual wrap of masking tape and red electrical tape called for in the instructions. After cutting all the tape that bound the engine compartment cables together, I slid on the three-hole cap-plug from the kit and bonded it in place with silicone sealant.

Note: the kit instructions mention that the bolts that tie the motor mount in the kit to the front Porsche motor mount are 3 1/2 inches long; however, I think this is a typo because I had to go back and purchase 2 1/2 inch bolts because the 3 1/2 ones were almost exactly one inch too long.

As you may remember, I received a package from Azure Dynamics several weeks ago with a notice saying that the bolts on their electric motors tend to work their way loose occasionally. I received a package from Azure Dynamics yesterday with a field upgrade to the bolts on the AC24 motor for the EV kit. With the electric motor mounted in the car, I can't perform the upgrade because the bolts won't slide out. Update: DOH!

The dangling white and green wire go to the ammeter shunt and the dangling black wire I think is not used in the AC kit. Most of the wires attach to the upper terminal block to interface with the DMOC AC controller. The moment of truth!

The 914 AC kit uses 8V golf cart batteries and I'm wondering if different batteries like Hawkers or Optima Yellow-Top batteries would be better. We might possibly work together on a project after chatting at the next OEVA (Oregon Electric Vehicle Association) meeting. Both US-Battery and Trojan have 8-volt golf-cart batteries.

I contacted Ken Hall at PakTrakr.com and he suggested adding EMI suppression cores to the links between the "remote" units to cut down on electrical noise. On a slightly non-914ev related note, I'm going to be running for a co-chair position within the Oregon Electric Vehicle Association. We'll see what this year has in store.

In the original kit instructions, the regen relay turns on the brake lights when the AC controller is in regen mode. I recommend this alteration to anyone using this kit! Much to my delight, the work actually happened without him telling me and there's a plug-in (with an Electric Vehicles Only sign!!!!)

The fifth wire called for in the AC kit instructions is supposed to be black with a yellow stripe for the rear brake lights. It would be great to make a pulse generator that gets this working to match the RPM of the electric motor! The black wire is the 12V switched line from the ignition. Ah, fun projects for much later days.

One of the other 914 kit converters questioned why the accessory battery couldn't stay in the original tray, but I decided to remove it anyway and have the accessory battery up in the front trunk near the DC/DC converter. I wanted to test to see if the 12V electrical system still worked. to power the washer solution sprayer.

Since this kit is the 914 AC kit, I have no idea how to install the controller plate. I've contacted Randy Pollock, the first person to order a 914 AC kit and he and I are working to figure this out. In addition, ElectroAuto hasn't sent any hardware (specifically the rivnuts) so I can install many of these pieces.

I finally got to work on the electric car again today. Here is the 9-in-1 wire for the AC kit pulled through the grommet between the passenger compartment and the fuel compartment. WARNING: the DC kit instructions call for 1/4"-20 x 1/2" bolts to hold on the DC-DC converter; however, the holes actually take 10-32 x 3/8" bolts instead.

For some reason, I had an extra cap-plug left over from the kit, so I used it to protect the cable from the sharp metal edges. I cleaned this up today by taking out the two seats, pulling forward the upholstery in front of the firewall and drilling a hole for the serial cable.
