The Second UN Global Sustainable Transport Conference concluded with a call to accelerate progress towards achieving sustainable transport that would result in major reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and in improving the lives of millions of people. The pandemic caused job losses and a disruption to global supply chains.

The target is showcasing the train to a global audience attending the COP26 conference in Glasgow in November. Our Rail Decarbonization Action Plan sets out to make our passenger railways emissions free by 2035, but to maximise our climate change ambitions, there is also a requirement to look at what we do with retired stock.

Transport activity currently contributes 23% of global CO2 emissions from fossil fuels, with the share expected to rise. The COP 21 Paris Agreement created a political pathway for global CO 2 mitigation efforts.

The Paris Agreement looks to limit global warming to under 2 ËšC, with a more ambitious goal of 1.5 ËšC If the emissions gap is not closed by 2030, the report says, it is extremely unlikely that the goal of holding global warming to well below 2 ËšC can still be reached. C also on the table. C will already be well depleted by 2030.
