Looking to get in a hybrid for cheap? Used Toyota Prius 1.5 HSD 2004-2009 Review

Green Car Congress

I knew I wanted something for her that was cheap to maintain, had a reliable automatic transmission, came with cruise control, AC. On the way there, I made a pit stop at a gas station to buy a bottle of champagne as a gift, hoping to start out a conversation with a stranger on the right foot. Priuses can burn oil.

Chalmers team identifies two main challenges for bio-hydrocarbon fuel production from cheap sources

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, have identified two main challenges for renewable biofuel production from cheap sources: lowering the cost of developing microbial cell factories; and establishing more efficient methods for hydrolysis of biomass to sugars for fermentation. Univ of Washington team working to make poplar coppice viable cheap, high-volume biofuel feedstock

Green Car Congress

The UW team is the first to try converting the entire young tree—leaves, bark and stems—into bio oil and ethanol using two separate processes. Our research proved that poplar coppice can be a good option to meet the cheap, high-volume criteria of biofuel feedstock. That’s the problem.

Perspective: Drive Star Conversion Program Could Cut US Oil Use in Half by 2020

Green Car Congress

In a pre-response to that speech, having successfully advocated for plug-in hybrids like the forthcoming Chevy Volt, we propose that the President follow that speech up with a “realistic and conservative” roadmap to halve our oil use in 10 years. Oil is holding us all hostage, economically and physically. Finally, it’s time to begin.

China researchers synthesize high-density aviation fuel with cellulose

Green Car Congress

Scientists in China have developed a process for converting cellulose from plant waste from agriculture and timber harvesting into high-density aviation fuel: a polycycloalkane mixture. Tuning the reaction conditions also permits the selective production of methyl cyclopentane, which can be used as high-octane-number gasoline additive.

UC Davis process produces gasoline-range hydrocarbons from biomass-derived levulinic acid; field-to-tank yield of >60% claimed

Green Car Congress

Considering that levulinic acid is available with more than 80% conversion from raw biomass, a field-to-tank yield of drop-in, cellulosic gasoline of more than 60% is possible, the researchers claimed. barrels of oil (117.6 Biodiesel, refined from plant-based oils, is already commercially available to run modified diesel engines.

Lund researchers develop optimized two-phase enzymatic process for production of biodiesel

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Lund University (Sweden) have developed an optimized two-phase enzymatic (lipase) system for the conversion of plant oils to biodiesel. Applied to the solvent-free ethanolysis of rapeseed oil, the system delivered a yield of 96% under mild conditions. Most lipases have a lid covering the lipophilic active site.
