Novel adaptation for existing blast furnaces could reduce steelmaking emissions by 88%; closed-loop carbon recycling

Green Car Congress

This reduction is achieved through a closed-loop carbon recycling system, which could replace 90% of the coke typically used in current blast furnace-basic oxygen furnace systems and produces oxygen as a byproduct. The perovskite can be regenerated to its original form in a chemical reaction that takes place in a low oxygen environment.

Sustainable Rail International, U of Minnesota partner to develop most powerful carbon-neutral locomotive, using new steam engine and biocoal

Green Car Congress

Biocoal exhibits the same energy density and material handling properties as coal, but unlike coal, it is carbon-neutral, contains no heavy metals, and produces less ash, smoke and volatile off-gases. CSR plans to break the world record for steam locomotive speed, reaching 130 mph (209 km/h).

UN Environment report says national GHG pledges only bring one-third of reductions needed for Paris Agreement

Green Car Congress

Even if the current Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) are fully implemented, the carbon budget for limiting global warming to below 2 ˚C will be about 80% depleted by 2030. Given currently available carbon budget estimates, the available global carbon budget for 1.5 ˚C C will already be well depleted by 2030.
