Bill McKibben’s “Do The Math” article in 2012′s Rolling Stone magazine taught us that we cannot burn any more than 565 gigatons of carbon if we want to stay at 2° or lower. But our friends in the oil, coal and gas industry have 5,795 gigatons of carbon on the books.

I just read the article in the June/July issue of Homepower magazine written by two firemen who have solar panels on their roofs. FROM HOMEPOWER MAGAZINE written by Fire engineer Matthew Paiss: Access, pathways, and smoke-ventilation space: Providing a 3-foot setback from the edges of the roofline. All of a sudden it was on fire.

According to Fortune magazine’s cover story this week, BYD’s cost-cutting moves so far include hiring people to assemble batteries instead of buying the $100,000 robotic arms used by Japanese competitors, flying executives in coach for business travel and putting them up in suburban rentals instead of posh downtown hotels for events.

Sorry, but electrics and electric power plants are so efficient that CO2 emissions are less than gassers even when the electricity comes from coal - and a lot of electricity doesnt come from coal. Well, the cheapest source is from steam reformed fossil fuels, and that process produces CO2, especially when that fossil fuel is coal.

But lately, I’ve adopted a “We’re All Doomed As Doomed Can Be” attitude and it’s only been encouraged and amplified by reveling in the misery that is Wallace’s “The Uninhabitable Earth’ and Nathaniel Rich’s “Losing Earth” edition of The New York Times magazine.

There was a nice selection of books, especially guides to the flora and fauna of the High Sierras. We also found magazines ( Utne Reader anyone?) I pulled an old issue of Sierra (the magazine of the Sierra Club) from July/August 1997. On 13 acres and just a 15 minute drive from the Park’s southern entrance.
