Mistakenly blaming the battery type (NiMH) for the meager all-electric performance, AutoBlogGreen remains as confused as most auto journalists about plugs and cars, plug-in hybrids, electric cars, and batteries. The 24 NiMH batteries in my Toyota RAV4 EV take the car 120 miles without gasoline. Theoretically, yes.

The French auto company will use the batteries in the 2011 Peugeot 3008 SUV. The Nikkei is reporting that Sanyo Electric Co. has signed an agreement with PSA Peugeot Citroen to supply nickel-metal hydride batteries for diesel-electric hybrids. Peugeot wants to be the first car maker to put diesel-electric powertrains into production vehicles.

I've long heard rumors of Chinese auto makers developing an electric car. I recalled hearing in 2005 that BYD acquired a license from Ovonics to manufacture NiMH batteries. It makes lots of sense, given Chinese battery production. Now Autobloggreen has a report out of China involving BYD. we get a name, F6E, and a photo.

Bob Lutz, GM CEO, sat down to chat with some bloggers at the NY Auto Show, and PODTECH has the video. Asked why not Nickel Metal Hydride batteries in the Volt, at least to start, he says "NiMH just doesn't do it." Interestingly, Lutz says GM is being approached by NiMH manufacturers to use this proven battery chemistry in the Volt.
