Researchers at the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD), China Lake report on a solvent-free process for the conversion of 2,3-Butanediol (2,3-BD)—a renewable alcohol that can be prepared in high yield from biomass sugars—to a complex mixture of 2-ethyl-2,4,5-trimethyl-1,3-dioxolanes and 4,5-dimethyl-2-isopropyl dioxolanes.

Researchers from the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology have proposed a new process for the conversion of biomass to gasoline via a one-step DME synthesis (DTG: Dimethyl ether to gasoline). The gasoline obtained from the pilot plant had a high octane number (RON>93). kg/h, respectively.

In the journal Angewandte Chemie , Chinese scientists report on a new bifunctional catalyst that converts syngas to lower olefins (C 2 -C 4 ) with high selectivity. The first step in such a process would involve the conversion of these materials into syngas through either gasification or steam reforming.
