An alternative method is to use low potential reducing power from non-biomass sources, such as hydrogen gas or electricity, to reduce carbon dioxide directly into products. The research team then used hydrogen gas to create a chemical reaction in the microorganism that incorporates carbon dioxide into 3-hydroxypropionic acid.
