Study: surface ozone in India in 2005 damaged 6M tonnes of crops, enough to feed 94M people in poverty

Green Car Congress

Ozone, the main component of smog, is a plant-damaging pollutant formed by emissions from vehicles, cooking stoves and other sources. New research shows that ozone pollution damaged millions of tons of wheat, rice, soybean and cotton crops in India in 2005. Surface ozone pollution in India damaged 6 million metric tons (6.7

WHO issues new, lower Global Air Quality Guidelines for classical pollutants

Green Car Congress

New WHO has issued new Global Air Quality Guidelines (AQGs) that reduce levels of key air pollutants, some of which also contribute to climate change. Since WHO’s last 2005 global update, there has been a marked increase of evidence that shows how air pollution affects different aspects of health. Source: WHO. nitrogen dioxide (NO?)

Study associates long-term exposure to air pollution with increasing emphysema

Green Car Congress

Long-term exposure to ambient air pollutants, especially O 3 (ozone), is significantly associated with increasing emphysema, according to a new study led by the University of Washington, Columbia University and the University at Buffalo. The annual averages of ozone levels in study areas were between about 10 and 25 ppb.

Cutting Non-CO2 Pollutants Can Delay Abrupt Climate Change; The Fast Action Climate Agenda

Green Car Congress

Probability distribution for the committed warming by GHGs between 1750 and 2005. This would mean that the climate system is close to entering if not already within the zone of “dangerous anthropogenic interference” (DAI). HFCs are powerful greenhouse gases originally developed as substitutes for ozone-depleting chemicals.

Emissions of potent GHG HFC-23 have grown, contradicting reports of huge reductions

Green Car Congress

This would have been a big win for climate. That the reduction has not materialized—and that global emissions have instead risen—is a puzzle, and may have implications for the Montreal Protocol, the international treaty that was designed to protect the stratospheric ozone layer. —co-author Dr Matt Rigby.

US Climate Action Report to UN Projects 4% Growth in Total US GHG Emissions to 2020

Green Car Congress

From 2005 through 2020, total US greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are projected to rise by 4% under a “with measures” scenario (but without a cap-and-trade program and other complementary policies), from 7,109 Tg CO 2 Eq. from 2005 to 2020. The United States released previous Climate Action Reports in 1994, 1997, 2002, and 2006.
