Karen Newell discovered a method of increasing the amount of oil produced by algae while researching a cancer drug. Newell recently received a $750,000 grant to expand research into developing plant-based fuels. Biotech drug therapy company Viral Genetics, Inc., has appointed biofuel specialist John Sheehan to its advisory board.

Avantium, which spun off from Shell in 2000 to develop furan-based biofuels and biomaterials, has begun construction of a pilot plant at the Chemelot site (Geleen, the Netherlands) to convert carbohydrates into furanic building blocks—which the company calls “YXY”—for making renewable materials and fuels.
