Opel has so far received some 7,000 orders for the Ampera electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt’s European cousin. Enno Fuchs, Opel’s e-mobility launch director, said that the Ampera sales target of 10,000 units for 2012 is “well within reach.”

Opel has priced the 2011 Ampera, the Chevy Volt’s European cousin ( earlier post ), starting at €42,900 (US$58,786), including national VAT. In Germany, with 19% VAT, the Ampera net price is €36,050 (US$49,397). Opel says it is also researching customer preferences regarding financing and leasing schemes for the Ampera.

European buyers may soon have one fewer plug-in vehicle to choose from, with news that the Opel Ampera--European cousin to the Chevrolet Volt--could be dropped due to slow sales. The Ampera arrived to much critical acclaim, just as the Volt did in the U.S.

If you're familiar with the 2011 Chevrolet Volt range-extended EV, then you're already familar with the Opel Ampera, since it's essentially the same car. The Ampera will be sold under General Motors' other brands, the Germany-based Opel and in the U.K. as the Vauxhall Ampera.
