By replacing the traditional mechanical driveline with an electric motor integrated directly into the vehicle’s differential housing, the e-Axle provides greater design flexibility for battery placement and truck body attachment. The four-wheel drive system uses dual direct-drive traction motors, one on the front axle, the other on the rear. The Workhorse W-15 could assist in all of these areas by reducing emissions, as well as reducing fuel and maintenance costs. The W-15 electric pickup will be unveiled at the ACT EXPO show in Long Beach, California on 2 May.

The original 2015 E-GEN Drive was propelled by a 200 kW Sumo electric motor/generator (from tm4 Electrodynamic Systems) with a 60 kWh pack (45 kWh usable) built with Panasonic 18650 Li-ion cells. The trucks will be deployed in Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Nevada, Ohio and Texas later this year.
